Stand for District B

My name is Kendra London, and I grew up on Lyons Avenue in historic Fifth Ward, raised by my Grandmother and community elders. I have been advocating in my community since 2014; I am running for City Council to continue this work.

I know firsthand of the multiple hardships and injustices that residents in District B face. I have experienced homelessness, enrolled in housing and assistance programs, and recently resigned as the Resident Service Coordinator on a HUD property due to cruel treatment of tenants. I strive to be a part of the solution by advocating for Fair Housing, Economic Development, Community Engagement, Environmental & Racial Justice.

As the founder of Our Afrikan Family, Circle Coalition, and Kemistry Learning Center, I’ve built the capacity to educate and research with my neighbors and neighboring communities on how a true Community Benefits Agreement should be structured. As a community servant, I’ve witnessed that when we stand together, we can create positive change.

As your council member, I will fight for you, the residents of District B. Together, we can bring equitable investment and protect the culture and lives in Fifth Ward. So let’s get to it.

What I will fight for

  • Ensuring Fair Housing

Certain landlords and housing companies throughout our district have allowed homes to fall into disrepair leaving residents to experience inhumane and unsafe living conditions. As a community organizer, I have been fighting to enact policies that hold those responsible accountable for making timely and adequate housing repairs, and as a council member I will continue these efforts.

  • Leveraging Billions of Dollars of New Federal Funding

The Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the Infrastructure, Investment and Jobs Act provides billions of dollars of funding for infrastructure and clean energy projects that mean good-paying jobs for our district. I will work to ensure that our community reaps the benefits from these major funding bills.

    Supporting Small Businesses

I will push to ensure that whenever the city contracts out jobs or provides economic funding that our small businesses that employ locally are first in line instead of big corporations that move most of their profits outside of the community.

  • Institutionalizing Community Benefits’ Agreements

Too often, projects receive city government funding without input from the community members that will most be affected. As your city representative I will work to amend the city charter to ensure that every development project that receives city funding has signed a Community Benefits’ Agreement, ensuring that they have taken community concerns into account.

    City Council Meeting Accessibility

City Council meetings take place during the workday making it difficult for residents with regular jobs to make their voice heard. You shouldn’t have to take a day off work or miss your lunch break to interact with your government. That is why as a City Councilmember I will work to give you the ability to record testimonies beforehand that can be played during meetings you can’t make it to.
